Route 27 : Oudtshoorn - Prince Albert

Distance

73 km

Difficulty

Easy

About the Route

This route is an exciting one! and takes you from Oudtshoorn to the lovely town of Prince Albert via the Swartbergpass. The pass itself is completely gravel, but the state of the roads is good. We saw several small rental cars bouncing around on the pass. Some sections are quite steep, so keep your concentration. There are several viewpoints where you can safely pull off and enjoy your surroundings. Once you start on your way down, there are sharp hairpin bends everywhere. Halfway down there is an option to go left into "Die Hell". This road is a bit more challenging that the Swartbergpass and there is only one way in and out. Views are spectacular and the road can be a nice challenge, there are camping sites and other accommodation along this road if you wish to make this a two day trip. As you carry on down the Swartberg Pass the unexpected happens, it even becomes better! Once you are all the way down you ride through the most amazing rock formations that are out of this world. We had a little picnic next to the river here and that was a very good call! Once you are out of the Swartberg Pass it is only a short ride to Prince Albert where you will be greeted by many beautiful well kept white houses next to the road. Have a walk through town and admire all the old architecture.
