About the Route
This route takes you from De Pakhuys to Vanrhynsdorp via Lambert's Bay. The first bit follows the same road over the pakhuis Pass, back to Clanwilliam. From there it will be all tar towards Lambert's Bay. There are not many options on roads out here! In Lambert's Bay, the route takes you to Bird Island, breeding ground for the endangered Cape Gannet. There is a small fee at the entrance, but if you are interested in Nature it is worth it. We asked the lovely waitresses at Isabella's restaurant to keep an eye on our bags. The Island can only be reached by foot, and you have to park in the Harbour, in front of the restaurant. They also have a very nice seafood platter if you are hungry after the visit to the birds. Once the birds (and maybe the smell) has chased you off the island, you will continue your way out of Lambert's Bay. Just on the outskirts, you will take a left turn onto a gravel road. We had a little giggle, as the signboard warning you about this gravel road is not very encouraging. But in our case, the gravel road wasn't too bad beside some corrugation. The gravel road takes you all the way to Vredendal where it will become tar. From Vredendal it is only a short ride on the tar to Vanrhynsdorp.
